Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a one-time self-defense workshop or an ongoing program?
The women's self-defense program at Gracie Barra Alamo Heights is ongoing — not a single seminar. Real self-defense ability comes from repetition and practice over time. You will train regularly, build muscle memory, and develop the composure to respond effectively under stress. That depth of preparation is something a two-hour workshop cannot provide.
Do I need to be fit or strong to learn self-defense?
No. The techniques taught at Gracie Barra Alamo Heights are built on leverage and positioning — specifically designed for situations where the attacker is bigger and stronger. Women of all fitness levels and body types train here successfully. You will build strength and conditioning naturally as you train, but you do not need to be in any particular shape to start. Call (210) 864-7909 to book your free first class.
Is there a BJJ gym near Monte Vista or Tobin Hill?
Gracie Barra Alamo Heights is about 8 minutes from the Monte Vista and Tobin Hill neighborhoods. Head east on Hildebrand or north on Broadway to Austin Highway -- we are at 1464 Austin Hwy, Suite 100, San Antonio, TX 78209. While Marra Senki BJJ targets this area, they are located 8 miles away. GB Alamo Heights is significantly closer for anyone living along the Broadway corridor. Call (210) 864-7909 to try a free class.
What is the class schedule like for someone working in Midtown or Monte Vista?
Our weekday schedule is built for working professionals. Adult BJJ and No-Gi classes run in the evening block from 5:30 to 7:30 PM, Monday through Friday. If you work from home or have a flexible schedule, Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 AM are another option. From the Pearl or upper Broadway, you can be at the academy in under 10 minutes. Professor Edgar, a 1st Degree Black Belt, and Professor Zaza, a 2nd Degree Black Belt, lead the instruction.
